Tendinitis: The Most Common Repetitive Movement Injury

The most common type of repetitive movement injury that I often see in patients is tendinitis.  The muscles are attached to bones by tendons and when these tendons get frayed at their attachment point, tendinitis occurs.  In the elbow area, you are going to use what is called a ‘tennis elbow support’ to fix this injury.  In my opinion, the best support out there is Aircast yet there are a number of different companies that make this type of brace.  The brace is put on right below the elbow and the point of pain.  It then tricks the muscle into thinking the attachment point is located where the brace is currently placed.  The area from above the brace to the attachment point of the bone is then able to rest.  When that area can rest, the injury will be able to heal because it is no longer being overused.

Any word that ends in ‘I-T-I-S” refers to inflammation, making tendinitis an inflammation of the tendon.  Similarly, bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa sack.  Tendinitis and bursitis are the most common types of overuse injuries.  You can find these inflammations in many different parts of your body including your shoulder, wrist, elbow, knee or ankle.  The most important thing you can do for this type of injury is to rest the area as soon as the symptoms start to develop.  The more you rest the area, the better chance you have of your injury healing.  When you work on the muscles and build them up stronger, they will be able to handle more stress from athletic activity and these injuries will occur much less.
